Reinventing software for the future of the Internet of Things

GenerIoT transforms the way software for smart devices is created and managed, promoting more secure, agile, and sustainable IoT systems.

The GenerIoT operation aims to transform the way software for smart devices is created and managed, promoting more secure, agile and sustainable IoT systems.

A technological leap in the way IoT is developed

GenerIoT, co-financed by COMPETE 2030, focuses on innovative methodologies to simplify and accelerate software development in IoT systems. The goal is to unite the development and operation phases (DevOps), creating devices that are more efficient and adaptable to constant technological and security changes.

Throughout the life cycle of an IoT device — from design to operation — the need for adaptation is constant. The project proposes a continuous and dynamic approach that allows for secure and automatic updates, reducing failures and cybersecurity risks.

Simplifying the complexity of smart networks

IoT systems are complex networks made up of countless interconnected devices. This diversity increases the risk of errors and vulnerabilities. GenerIoT aims to respond to this challenge with agile, adaptive and automated processes, using code generation to create software that adapts to different sensors, algorithms and communication protocols.

As Lurian Klein, from the Innovation Department at Cleanwatts Digital, explains, “At Cleanwatts Digital, we have been consolidating an innovation and internationalisation strategy that mirrors the main objectives of COMPETE 2030 — namely, strengthening research and innovation, the competitiveness of companies and their presence in foreign markets.”

A European and collaborative approach

This project is part of an international EUREKA consortium, which brings together 18 partners from four European countries. In Portugal, the national component focuses on the development of model-based software engineering (MBSE) methodologies, which ensure consistency between hardware, software and communication channels.

On this basis, GenerIoT aims to enable systems to detect anomalies in real time, self-adjust and evolve safely over time.

Innovation at the service of energy transition

GenerIoT’s advances will be tested in a use case in IoT systems for energy communities, promoting efficiency and sustainability. This aspect demonstrates the practical application of a technology that can revolutionise not only the IoT, but also the way we manage energy.

As Lurian Klein further emphasises, “In several previous projects supported by COMPETE 2020, we have developed digital solutions for IoT, energy flexibility and energy communities that have already demonstrated their ability to scale and generate value. Based on this experience, we see COMPETE 2030 as the ideal vehicle to bring the next generation of these solutions — secure, intelligent and efficient software for IoT devices and distributed networks — to an international scale.”

With this vision, GenerIoT aims to accelerate the digital and energy transition, promoting a greener, more competitive and connected future — in line with the spirit of COMPETE 2030: Portugal + Competitive / + Green / + Social.
